About me

Hello!

Thank you for stopping by; it's lovely to meet you.

My name is Emma, and I own and run Wild & Unruly.

At the moment, I work from my home-based flower studio in Walton, Felixstowe, however, my dream is to have my own flower shop in a lovely old barn with lots of character, surrounded by fields of flowers, all homegrown and ready to be used in bouquets and arrangements, and a PYO field so that you can come and experience the joy of picking your own flowers. One day, hopefully!

I grew up with green-fingered parents. Mum was into Alpine plants, and Dad grew roses and runner beans. I remember many happy Sunday afternoons looking around garden centres, somethings never change!!

When I left high school, I wanted to become a florist, but my nearest college was over an hour away, and it felt like an impossible dream, so I enrolled in the local college for a secretarial course instead! Now that my children are all grown up, I have been working hard to hone my horticultural skills to grow flowers specifically for cutting and lots of training and work experience to enhance my floristry skills.

In 2023, I established Wild & Unruly with a vision to provide eco-friendly floral arrangements inspired by the seasons using British-grown flowers wherever possible and a commitment to contributing to a more sustainable floral industry.

It’s hard to imagine that only 50 years ago, nearly 80% of the flowers we used to buy were produced here in the UK. Sadly, today, it’s more like 10%.

Over the last 10 years, we have seen a welcome rise in the number of British Flower Growers. Yorkshire farmer Gill Hodgson MBE set up the not-for-profit group Flowers from the Farm in 2011 to encourage more growers to produce flowers for the home market to reduce the amount of imported flowers. With over 350 members, it’s the UK’s biggest network of cut flower growers on a mission to “get local blooms back into every vase”. I am proud to be a member of this group.

At the moment, I have a small cutting garden where I grow lots of flowers, herbs, and foliage. This means I can bring you freshly cut, highly scented blooms that I have personally grown and nurtured. I also have a network of wonderful growers in Suffolk and Essex who supply me with beautiful blooms from their flower farms and growers across the UK.

Being eco-friendly doesn't just mean using British flowers; it's about being thoughtful across all areas of my business. I do not use traditional floral foam in any arrangements because it never breaks down entirely and leaves microplastics in our environment. Instead, I use my imagination, creativity and continuous research to develop reusable, compostable, and environmentally friendly mechanics. I use recyclable containers, chicken wire, water, moss, twigs, and other natural materials in my designs. I use thoughtful packaging that is either compostable, recyclable or reusable.

As I mentioned before, I love that I am a small business because it allows me to give you the excellent customer service you deserve. I will do everything I can to accommodate any special requests; I have been known to drive around all the local garden centres to find spring flowers out in bloom in December for a floral tribute (and yes, I did succeed, thanks to the fantastic Kiln Farm Nursery in Kesgrave).  I promise I will always let you know when your flowers have been delivered and send you a picture of the bouquet/arrangement.

Anyway, I better let you get on, and I best go tend to my flowers!

Thank you so much for supporting my small business, it truly means the world to me.

Love,
